As the calendar flips to a new year, many of us get excited for that new fresh start. If you are like many of us you might be super excited to give your house the much-needed new year TLC. These are my tried and true home decluttering tips for the new year that might give you the little nudge that you were waiting for!
Declutter plan
Find a decluttering plan that suits you better with your routine and work process. It’s easier and so much faster to work with a game plan and to know what needs to be done. My decluttering plan includes the list of spaces I want to tackle for this new year project which usually are –
- Entryway
- All the closets in the house
- Kitchen
- Playroom
- And lastly the garage (which is always the biggest mess)
One Space Per Day
As an ambitious woman, you might be too eager to finish this massive project within 2 days. But if you have small kids or work full-time, taking one large space or 2 small spaces per day would be very much doable and would not leave you burned out. Having good time management would come in handy for a massive project like this because you definitely would not want to spend all of your holiday decluttering and cleaning.

“Stuff I never use” challenge
This step could be a struggle for some people while some would have a blast tossing all the unused items in the declutter box. But it is very important to get all the ‘no use’ stuffs out of the way to give your brain less thinking and work to do. Use the three-box method. Keep,” “Donate,” and “Trash.” As you go through items in a particular area, decide which category each item belongs to.
The hanger hack
Turn all the hangers in your closet backwards at the beginning of the year. As you wear and rehang each item, turn the hanger the right way. By the end of the year, you’ll easily spot the clothes you haven’t worn and can consider donating them.
The power of organizer and labeling
Don’t underestimate the power of organizing and labeling. This massive decluttering would be in no use if it doesn’t make your day to day life increasingly easier dealing with the items you ended up with. Keep some budget aside to invest in some organizing bins and label them. Labeling bins, drawers, and shelves makes it easier for everyone in the household to find what they need and put things back in their proper place.
Digital Decluttering
Our digital lives need decluttering too. Spend some time cleaning up your phone with 55,745 pictures, computer, and email inbox. Delete unused apps, organize files into folders, and unsubscribe from newsletters you no longer read.
Create a ‘Drop Zone’
Designate a specific area near the entrance of your home as a “drop zone.” Use hooks, shelves, or a small table to organize keys, mail, and everyday essentials. This will prevent clutter from spreading throughout your home.
